I don't claim to know much about the candidates. I posted the other day that since the party candidate and the president are elected by caucuses and the electoral college (I'm willing to be corrected) that we have nothing to lose to vote our consciences in the popular election. I'm pretty convinced that I don't want Mike Huckabee, but in looking at Ron Paul, even though I appreciate his economic stand, I'm not sure I agree with him on not involving ourselves with other countries. I don't like how we've somehow become the world's policeman. But what do you do when you're the strong man and the little geeky guy is getting beat up? Do you just stand by and watch? I was thinking about this today when I listened to the Teaching Company lecture from the set by Rufus Fears on Winston Churchill. We wanted to be isolationist in WWII, too. In trying to get the US to become involved, Churchill said that it was like a man whose house was on fire. Wouldn't it be better to help get the fire put out before it spread to yours and others' houses, too? Some have said we've become selectively involved....when we have some economic stake (e.g. oil), but not when it's just pure principle. I don't know enough to know whether that's true or not.
