Juanita asked how my kids had been sneaky, and so I thought I'd tell the whole thing in a separate post. When I wrote that I only meant it in very limited sense. Sam had signed on as me to announce that today was my birthday (note the use of "mama" in his part of the post). Then I added the part about it being my 50th which makes it a bit more special, and I like to flaunt my age (Renee, I'm proud to be an "Older Woman" :-) ) So in my post I was just referring to how Sam had logged onto my blog to announce my birthday. BUT I was told this morning that they wanted me to go hide out in a room (my "office", but I asked to switch to the bedroom after awhile), so that they could prepare. I didn't think too much of it. My husband called me out and friends of ours that I hadn't seen for a long time were here. Their kids are grown and they said they'd been out and driving around and thought they'd stop. Since we live out in the country and they live on the other side of the city we live near, it's not like it would be a normal place to drive around, but it was believable. So we were talking a few minutes, and I do have to admit that it did cross my mind that it seemed a little strange for them to drop by just before lunch. Nate and Amy were planning on leaving after we'd celebrated my birthday at lunch and I wasn't sure how we were going to handle the birthday deal without making them feel bad for "barging in" on the birthday celebration. Then while they were there, my neighbor came by. That's not at all unusual and it has happened that she has stopped by when other people are here. I didn't really pay much attention to her because she was talking to the kids after wishing me a happy birthday (she always remembers my birthday, so there's nothing unusual about that)....but then about five minutes later another friend came and I stood up to greet her when I saw all her kids with her, and I thought *THAT* is too coincidental. Then it dawned on me that they had planned a surprise party when another family came in right behind the other. I was soooooo surprised and I don't surprise easily. I can ferret out any little thing and figure it out. HOWEVER, this time, I never would have suspected that they would give me a surprise party...for one thing, I don't have that many friends.:-) (I like to think that I have few but good, close friends--not that those of you who have lots more--like those of you expecting 120 people for a New Year's Party--have shallow friends.:-) ) But you know what I mean. I've never been one of the popular people and so would almost be afraid to throw a party for me. There were a couple of odd things that had happened, but both involved my daughter-in-law and since she's not been around for a long time for family things, I just figure I don't know what all she might do. But things can be different with a daughter-in-law when all your oldest children are boys. The kids all gave me a mug (which Amy designed and coordinated) which has two sides--one is the proverb "Children are a heritage from the Lord" and the other side says "Blessed is the MOM whose mug is full of them" Then along the bottom edge around the circumference are each of the kids' signatures with their birth dates which Amy had them send to her by scanning and attaching to email. Very neat. I collect mugs, so it's something that goes along with *me*. Well, anyway, that's how kids and husbands can be sneaky. They went through my address book and Steve wrote a letter asking people to send cards, so it was really nice to hear from people I haven't heard from awhile even if they would rather have not had to send me a card.:-) P.S. Thank you for the birthday wishes! Read 0 Comments... >> |

Yesterday was Abbie's 16th birthday. She wanted to make gingerbread houses. I found several recipes for the gingerbread and used the one I found at about.com. I neglected to notice the LONG baking time, so it took me all day to bake enough for everyone. Sam declined to participate. The kids finished putting them together and decorating them this morning and dinner-time conversation centered on the ultimate fate of the gingerbread houses. Their destiny is to be used for target practice. To see more photos visit our photo gallery. Read 0 Comments... >> |

I always found that baking Christmas goodies with little kids to be...well a little trying. Now that the kids are older it's more fun and relaxing. "We have seen his star." Read 0 Comments... >> |
