2008 Icestorm

The internet was not working the morning after the storm and the roof was too slippery to climb without any aids. So we girls had the bright idea of throwing a rope over the roof. Wasn’t easy. Grace threw it all the way over the peak and to the gutter on the far side. But the gutter is about 20 feet off the ground. So we had to throw the rope over one of the lower kitchen roof just to reach the original rope. All this took about two hours. My skirt had gotten wet and frozen so stiff that I could hold it out straight and Grace wan’t very dry either.graceroof.jpg Any body want a bath? bathtub.jpgbell1.jpgbush.jpgresize1.jpgtree1.jpgA cold Mrs. Tibbs. coldtibbs.jpgdrivewy.jpg

“We’re cold. We’ll pay you anything you want if you let us in the house.”

One whale of a sentence

This is terribly funny.

Sarcophagus comes from the Greek words “Sarx” meaning flesh, and “Phagien” meaning to eat.

Herodotus noted that early sarcophagi were carved from a special kind of rock that consumed the flesh of the corpse inside. In particular, coffins made of a limestone had the property of consuming the bodies placed within them, and therefore was also called sarkophagos lithos (flesh-eating stone). All coffins made of limestone have this property to a greater or lesser degree, and the name eventually came to be applied to stone coffins in general.

Note: I copied most of this from Wikipedia but I first found out as the title of my post informs.

Since I last posted, Grace has gone to another show. This time she brought home a first and a second place trophy as well as several ribbons.

Now that Jed has moved out, we girls posses our own rooms. But some time around the moving process I lost a blouse. ( now that I’m thinking about it, I’m noticing it is the very one I am wearing in my profile picture) Since I only have two blouses, this is a major problem. I have rummaged through the house, top to bottom, twice. From the attic, to behind the dryer, to the outside garbage bins.

I’d better end this post. For one, it’s bedtime. For another, the glare from the computer is hurting my eyes and shortening my temper.

Grace’s horse show.

The show was divided into three age groups of 12 and under, 13-17, and 18 +. Grace was the only one who was in the 13-17 group, and on the bottom end of it too. So, they bumped her up into the adult group. :-) She won four 3rd’s. One of those doesn’t count a lot because there were only three competitors, but in one part she beat three adults and came in third behind two others.

Jessie was well dressed for the show, with her ears and whiskers trimmed and a neat little bridle path cut with the proper instruments.

During the “mares at halter”

12. What is on the walls of the room you are in? A world map and a white board.
13. Seen anything weird lately? Yup, my fingernail. I smashed it a couple of months ago and it turned entirely purple. That isn’t normally odd, but then the entire fingernail broke off where the blood had gathered underneath. Once I had flaked the dried blood out, there was another layer of fingernail underneath that! (I could go into more detail, but no one would appreciate it.)
14. What do you think of this quiz? fine

20. George Bush: Never met him.
21. Imagine your first child is a girl, what do you call her? Roseanne. tradition with a twist.

22. Imagine your first child is a boy, what do you call him? I had it all planned out but now I’ve forgotten.
23. Would you ever consider living abroad? I’ve considered it. (but that doesn’t mean anything)

24. What do you want God to say to you when you reach the pearly gate? You’re allowed in.

25. 3 people who must also do this quiz in their journal: Mrs. Tibbs, Simpkin, and Umbrus,

Speaking of which, my bold and easy demeanor instilled in Grace an unusual courage to test the obedience of Ben’s steed. She (the horse) spooked at a horse-fly while I was holding the reins and pulled them completely out of my hands and, in the process, bestowed on me the worst rope burns I have ever had in my memory. After a few bucks, Grace’s “courage” failed and she turned to a more trustworthy horse of her own. Upon unsaddling Sassy we discovered that she has learned the trick of holding her breath while being saddled, thus making the straps too loose when she lets out her breath. That horse is just too smart.
