Sunday, November 25th, 2007I’m glad I wrote that I was only “in” the first chapter in my previous post. Further on in the chapter:
This active use of time is of course for pleasure; its impulse is love. Everybody used to know this when the words amateur and dilettante were taken in their original meanings of “lover” and “seeker [...]
Culture and Scholarship
Sunday, November 25th, 2007I know I have other books I’ve started to read, but none of them hit the spot this Sunday afternoon. So I started another, The Culture We Deserve, by Jacques Barzun whose 100th birthday is later this week.
I’m only in the first chapter, but I can tell I’m really going to like this book. [...]
Paintings
Tuesday, August 28th, 2007MMV has posted about the book 1001 Paintings You Must See Before You Die. Honestly, I hesitate to say anything that would give my judgment on art because I don’t trust that I have very good taste. Reading her post immediately reminded me of two paintings. One is The Skater which hangs in The [...]
Happy Birthday, Great-Grandma Dulcie
Monday, August 27th, 2007August 27, 1872 was my great-grandmother’s birthday. Her name was really Amanda Sarah Jane (Green) Van Hoesen, but even on her tombstone the name Dulcie is given. She would be 135 years old today.
She’s the only female in this photo. The seated man is her father-in-law, Albertus Van Hoesen and the three boys [...]
Causes of the Civil War
Tuesday, August 14th, 2007For a time, I was influenced by reading things I’d not read before about the causes of the Civil War so that I came to believe that states’ rights was the main issue and that slavery was only one way that states’ rights was asserted. Then I read Arguing About Slavery which every [...]
Von Trapp Story
Monday, June 18th, 2007The National Archives has an interesting article about the real story of the Von Trapp family.
Happy Birthday, Patrick Henry!
Tuesday, May 29th, 2007I’m almost too late for anyone to appreciate this, but today (May 29th) is Patrick Henry’s birthday. Five years ago today we visited his home in Scotchtown, Virginia. We had a wonderfully informative and interesting docent. Scotchtown is a little off the beaten path and so we happened to find ourselves the only visitors at [...]
History comes alive….in a cemetery
Tuesday, May 1st, 2007Click on the photo to bring up a larger view.
This is Oak Hill Cemetery in San Jose, California. We visited on our trip to California and Oregon when we were checking out Gutenberg College for Sam 2 1/2 years ago (boy, is Abbie short!). My grandparents are interred at this cemetery (I use that [...]
Old Stuff
Monday, April 23rd, 2007My son Nate, who is a student at Penn State and thus not very far away, drove to the area of Kane and Dahoga, Pennsylvania yesterday. Kane is the town where my dad was born and lived until he was 15 when their family moved to California. Dahoga, which is not far from [...]
“Little Rock Nine”
Sunday, April 15th, 2007Okay, this is sort of a last ditch effort. I have been unable to find a movie that I saw several years ago. I had planned on watching it for Civil Rights era history and have been unable to find the movie (Netflix doesn’t even have it). It’s called The Ernest Green Story. [...]
