Thursday, January 24th, 2008From the Clarksville Star, Clarksville, Iowa; April 25, 1878:
A good deal of whispering took place on the sidewalk Thursday afternoon. I twas through a telephone on exhibition by Mrs. Mulinex. The instrument was stretched from the postoffice to the STAR office. You stuck your mouth into a starch-box at one end, and someone at [...]
Family History and Memorial Day
Thursday, December 6th, 2007This really would be a better post for Memorial Day, but since that’s a long while away, I’m going to go ahead and post it. The following excerpt comes from a book called Years Ago by Rudolf Priepke. Mr. Priepke was an unofficial town historian of Clarksville, Butler County, Iowa, an area in which [...]
Lazy Weekend
Sunday, September 16th, 2007Well, I’ve not had quite such an unproductive weekend in a very long time. I read a novel…I’d say the first in a very long time, but I did just finish Anna Karenina not very long ago. This was a modern novel though. I have trouble exercising discipline when reading fiction; so I just tend [...]
Happy Birthday, Great-Grandma Dulcie
Monday, August 27th, 2007August 27, 1872 was my great-grandmother’s birthday. Her name was really Amanda Sarah Jane (Green) Van Hoesen, but even on her tombstone the name Dulcie is given. She would be 135 years old today.
She’s the only female in this photo. The seated man is her father-in-law, Albertus Van Hoesen and the three boys [...]
The Three Grandpas
Friday, August 10th, 2007I’ve been working since sometime yesterday to sort through slides that belonged to my Grandma and Grandpa Lee (my dad’s parents). It’s easy to get distracted. I wanted to take a photo of all the piles of slides on my desk, but the batteries aren’t recharging. Anyway, this photo is interesting because it’s [...]
Holed up in…er…on my computer
Tuesday, August 7th, 2007I’m pretty proud of my efforts over the last few days. I totally revamped my husband’s business Web site (it looks better in Firefox than in IE, imo) and gave my genealogy site a new look. The genealogy site was certainly functional, but I had used one of their templates and had never personalized it. [...]
Thoughts
Sunday, July 22nd, 2007I’m not very good with catchy titles; can you tell? Today’s the first day after a two-and-a-half-week roller coaster ride, where I couldn’t look much at the scenery around me because I was too focused on what was placed right before me. Brenda of Coffee, Tea, Books, and Me wrote this:
We ponder [...]
Hardly knowing where to begin….
Friday, June 8th, 2007Some have been discussing what they’ll be doing for the summer and so I thought I’d add my plans. I really do plan on making up a reading list to participate in SeasonalSounding’s Summer Reading Challenge, but at the moment, I’m not sure how to prioritize my reading and to-do list. I rarely get everything [...]
Happy Birthday, Patrick Henry!
Tuesday, May 29th, 2007I’m almost too late for anyone to appreciate this, but today (May 29th) is Patrick Henry’s birthday. Five years ago today we visited his home in Scotchtown, Virginia. We had a wonderfully informative and interesting docent. Scotchtown is a little off the beaten path and so we happened to find ourselves the only visitors at [...]
Interesting-things-about-me tag
Sunday, May 6th, 2007Deanna at Stories Happen tagged me for this meme. Juanita offered to tag anyone wanting to be tagged–so I’ll consider this to be in response to her tag also. Only problem with this is that what is interesting to me may not be very interesting to anyone else. However, I’ll take my cue [...]
