Henle Latin

Friday, August 31st, 2007

For those of you who use Henle Latin, maybe some things I have made will be of help. I’ve uploaded some files to my main Web site that are helpful for uses of the subjunctive, vocabulary drill using the program V-Train, review of topics covered in Henle I

Bookmarks

Friday, August 31st, 2007

I wasted a little of my time this morning making some bookmarks. I merely did one and then changed the quotes on duplicated copies.
I use the OpenOffice Draw program to do stuff like this. I also make the covers and spine labels for binders with this program. I printed the bookmarks on cardstock [...]

Paintings

Tuesday, August 28th, 2007

MMV has posted about the book 1001 Paintings You Must See Before You Die. Honestly, I hesitate to say anything that would give my judgment on art because I don’t trust that I have very good taste. Reading her post immediately reminded me of two paintings. One is The Skater which hangs in The [...]

Happy Birthday, Great-Grandma Dulcie

Monday, August 27th, 2007

August 27, 1872 was my great-grandmother’s birthday. Her name was really Amanda Sarah Jane (Green) Van Hoesen, but even on her tombstone the name Dulcie is given. She would be 135 years old today.
She’s the only female in this photo. The seated man is her father-in-law, Albertus Van Hoesen and the three boys [...]

Grit

Grit I
Grit II
Grit III
These three installments of a Parent’s Review article from the 1890’s plus the Deputy Headmistress’s commentary makes for essential reading. I had wanted to write up a few comments of my own, but I will fall behind in some other things if I do. I have been convinced of the necessity of [...]

Causes of the Civil War

Tuesday, August 14th, 2007

For a time, I was influenced by reading things I’d not read before about the causes of the Civil War so that I came to believe that states’ rights was the main issue and that slavery was only one way that states’ rights was asserted. Then I read Arguing About Slavery which every [...]

College Advice

This article at Scriptorium Daily by John Mark Reynolds has lots of useful nuggets of advice for students leaving for college.

The Three Grandpas

Friday, August 10th, 2007

I’ve been working since sometime yesterday to sort through slides that belonged to my Grandma and Grandpa Lee (my dad’s parents). It’s easy to get distracted. I wanted to take a photo of all the piles of slides on my desk, but the batteries aren’t recharging. Anyway, this photo is interesting because it’s [...]

Holed up in…er…on my computer

Tuesday, August 7th, 2007

I’m pretty proud of my efforts over the last few days. I totally revamped my husband’s business Web site (it looks better in Firefox than in IE, imo) and gave my genealogy site a new look. The genealogy site was certainly functional, but I had used one of their templates and had never personalized it. [...]

Fine Art Friday

Wednesday, August 1st, 2007

I don’t usually participate in this because I’m so sorely lacking in artistic sense, that I don’t trust my judgment….However, this is GOOD…GREAT, even I might add. These are two photos of recent artwork done by my oldest son’s brother-in-law, Adam Nisbett.
